nyokai-an shakuhachi dojo
Shakuhachi: the traditional Japanese bamboo flute known for its haunting sound and the timeless quality of its ancient meditative repertoire.
I am Phil Nyokai James, and Nyokai-an is my dojo (school). I teach individual lessons in Boston, Portland, and other New England locations.
I teach the solo honkyoku music, sankyoku (classical trio music for shakuhachi, shamisen, and koto), improvisation, breath work and meditative approaches to musicianship.
